Yes, there is not way around it. I just unplug my detector everytime I get out of my car. If you forget, it should not kill your battery. But if you left it pluged in, eventually it would start to drain your battery. Radar and laser detectors don't really draw a whole lot of amps. Just unplug it when not in use.
