Not sure if you meant that, but just to clarify, these inserts are not steel, they are the same Locasil material to the one used on the other bank. Just the liners are separate pieces, not manufactured from one piece with the block, if that makes sense.

It's kind of common practice that machine shops rebuild otherwise toast engine blocks with new cylinder liners, and if it's done well, they last just as long as a factory engine. If you buy a used car, there's a chance that you have an engine in it that has such a modification that differs from the factory design, and when you see this for the first time you are not surprised too much, because you don't necessarily know what had happened to the car before you bought it.

What I think is really wild in this case is, that this modification was done at the factory. And, if you purchased a brand new Porsche in 1999 and it happened to carry a re-lined engine in it, it had the same exact price tag as another one, which had a normal engine.
