Boxsters!
Hi Stef914,
I purchased my first gen 1 Boxster using Craigslist and the second using Offerup. The second one had 68k miles and I was able to buy it for $7k. The body has about 2 dozen dings and the seat leather was shot, but you can purchase decent new covers from Lseat.com for $350 and have a good local upholster install them for around $500-$600.
Also plan to spend and additional $5-7k to refurbish all the parts for a 20 year old car. I needed a new starter, coolant expansion tank, thermostat, O2 sensors, spark plugs, hood and trunk struts, spark plugs and tubes, and brakes. I changed the water pump, spark plugs and coils as preventative maintenance. Higher mileage cars and you will probably want to have the fuel injectors cleaned or buy rebuilt units from GB remanufacturing. I recommend using RM European for parts, they typically ship next day and if your in LA area they have a distribution site there so parts will arrive in 2-3 days.
Ultimately I invested about $9k in the suspension alone (spec Boxster PSS9 setup), so I could have a nice track car for PCA DE/TT. Of course, to save $$$ I did all the basic maintenance and upgrades myself except for corner balancing, alignment and upholstery,
These are cars are the biggest bang for the buck in Porsche world today. I really wanted a 911SC but if you look at power to weight, the 97-99 Boxsters are on par and have way better suspensions. If you bring them up to good operating condition, do some simple light-weighting and improve the suspension, they are simply amazing. Good luck with your search, that second Boxster took me 2 years to find, but good cars and deals are out there.
