I was thinking the same too, thus found this old thread. I considered removing it as well, just wasn’t sure on what to use to plug the hole. If I had installed an after market intake, it would be removed, so likely just for sound muffling. Doubt there would be any performance gain, and likely a loss of mpg due to making the engine purr more often!
