The best way to check oil level in a 986 is to allow the engine to warm up to 180+ degrees. Next drive at 3000 rpm or less to your next stop to allow oil to drain out of heads to sump. Park on level surface & the longer you wait to check oil with dipstick a little more oil will drain into pan.
I don't rely on the dash gauge but I do check it when I restart the engine after getting gas. I have the FVD deep oil pan so I deduct 1 quart from max capacity.
