Also, since I didn't wanted to risk tearing the rubber boot on the ball joint, removed instead the bolt that connects the control arms to the subframe, figuring that you will have to align the car afterwards anyway... this would allow you to swing the bottom of the complete assembly (strut, brake, etc.) so the top of the strut clears the fender.

If you go this route, remember to have something to support the wheel hub as can be heavy with the weight of the rotor and caliper.
