So sorry to hear of that sad situation. Life sometimes does indeed suck.

Not harp about the oil change thing, but it's best to change the oil while it's still hot (at operating temperature for at least half an hour; it's best to drive the car to get it to true operating temperature. Letting it idle to warm up truly doesn't get the oil hot enough). That way all the bad stuff is still suspended in the oil and it will drain out of the motor along with the oil. If you let it cool down, then the bad stuff will settle and solidify in the bottom of the sump again.
