The map light is independant, there are three cables going to it, a switched 12v that comes live when the door opens, a constant 12v used for the switch and a ground. The other option would be to wire straight to the bulb contacts then you could have the footwell light up whenever the map light was on.

I didn't use a switch at all, I really don't see the benefit to be honest. It would need relays and all sorts of stuff to make it work and I can't envisage a case where I'd want to turn them on with a switch anyway. They come on when the door is opened and stay on with the other cabin lights, when they fade so do the footwell lights.
