Alienz, try these tests.

1) Ride as a passenger with the top down - the engine doesn't sound nearly as aggresive as when driving.

2) Stick your ear next to the air grills on each side and have someone blip the throttle a few times. The passenger side clatters while the drivers side goes whooosh.

3) Listen to the fan noise from each grill after you park your car. No fan noise on the driver's side.

These 3 experiments should convince you that the driver's side grill is used for sucking air INSIDE the engine, while the passenger side grill is for blowing air AROUND the engine.

If this doesn't work, you can actually look pull back the top and look at the engine compartment(not much to see, but kinda fun to learn how to do). There is an air filter on the drivers side and a fan on the passenger side.
