The GPS shows your groundspeed, not your airspeed. If there is a tailwind, you can see crazy numbers like that. One time on a Delta 767 from Seattle to Atlanta, I saw 750 mph on the GPS.
Going from Anchorage to Seattle, the plane arrived an hour late due to record winds. Fortunately, it was record tailwinds going the direction I was headed! What was normally a 3 1/2 hour flight took 2 1/4 hours. I would've loved to seen our groundspeed!
