You want the plug to be softer than the much more expensive oil pan it is plugged into. Use the right tool to remove it and torque it and there won't be a problem for 20 years. Crush washers are cheap and likewise designed to deform so you don't have to screw them in too tight.

I used to get a quick lube place to change mine under a watchful eye. They did several local P-cars. I'd bring them the parts. I bought in bulk, saved on shipping and ever rotated two plugs so they got a perfectly clean plug, washer and filter from me every time.
