The 986 and 987 (subsequently, 996 and 997) are essentially the same chassis. There were some improvements to the 9x7 suspension (which allow for larger wheel/tire diameter stock), and most of those can be transferred to the 9x6 cars (such as the rear track arms, for example).
They both feel good to drive. The 986 is more "basic" in the sense of classic purity, while the 987 is a bit more modern in amenities. But it mainly is which one you prefer on styling and driving.
