You have a car that you have no idea what has been done to it. Does the shifter look stock or feel odd? The first thing I'd do is see if you can find a shifter adjustment tool and go through the process of setting it up correctly. My thoughts are the shifter is completely out of adjustment and is attempting to shift into 2 gears simultaneously. Good Luck.
