After the American Revolution a good number of northern colony people chose to stay with the British and moved to Upper Canada, now Ontario, and were called United Empire Loyalists. Sounds like your great, great, great, grandaddy might have been one of them.
As time went by the people south of the 49th became our friends (thank god) and now lots of people choose to go back and/or come up here.
We have a lot more in common than we do differences even though some differences are pretty dramatic. Like why you guys like white gravy on biscuits or weak beer
and we like milk in bags (when in Ontario) and Bloody Caesers.
