I'd say it depends. If you do your due diligence, get the PPI done and car seems to be in pretty good condition, go for it and enjoy! I picked up a 2001 S not too long ago with 133k on it. Didn't do a PPI , but did get a chance to talk to the mechanic that serviced the car for the past 10+ years and went through the service history with him in detail. Purchase price was similar to yours, but mine had regular maintenance and had the IMS replaced as well as clutch several years back. As the others say, have an emergency fund of $2k/year and you should be fine.

I also considered getting an S2000 as I've had one in the past, but they were almost double the price! I'm glad I got the boxster now and would again even if the prices were the same between the two. Porsche is just a much more refined car and I can't stop driving it!
