I've been really lucky in finding a really great car that has barely cost me anything in 5 years of ownership. For peace of mind I had the IMS bearing replaced which is my only major expenditure.
My friend has a 2002 S and to his frustration, I have always kept up. Don't believe the hype, they are all quick.

I own an S, and I love it!! But I agree with this advice. Find the best Boxster you can...I don't think you will be disappointed either way you go.
