For your '04 you want a cluster out of a 2002, 2003 or 2004 996 Carrera 2, not a turbo and not a 4S. In order not to deal with reprogramming the cluster find one out of a cab. And, if you have PSM find one out of a '02 to '04 996 cab with PSM.

What I like about buying from this eBay seller is he shows you the VIN the car came out of and photos of the cluster with the lights on. There are so many defective units out there it is risky to buy these from untested sellers.

Also, while looking for a 996 cluster for my Boxster I found a lot of black face ones but few white (or more correctly, aluminum) face ones. I did some digging and found that for 2003 & 2004 the aluminum face gauges were an $855 option - X71.

Once I had the cluster I sent it to ODO-PRO.COM - Odo-Pro.com - The Digital Odometer Professionals to have the mileage reset to my Boxster's. Great service and for only $90.
