But if they get smart and offer a flat 8, that will go over much better. Problem is... not as profitable.

True roadsters need NA engines. 4,6 or 8 take your pick. A flat 4 would be nice but it would have to be in an ultra light Lotus Elise type Porsche roadster.
(at which point people would complain that it doesn't have enough power for them)
But none of that is what VW is trying to do, they're just trying to boost the margin over what they could otherwise get in a VW car with the same sort of engine.
