Yes, very sad news indeed. While many suggest that his come-back attempt with Mercedes was disappointing, his performance in qualifying relative to his team- mate Rosberg was quite close. The fact that this year Rosberg more than occasionally out-qualifed Hamilton, a driver who many consider the fastest qualifier in F1, suggests that Schumie still had it even into his forties: certainly his peformance in qualifying at Monaco a couple of years ago confirms the same.

While it is impossible to accurately compare drivers from different eras, there is little doubt that Michael Schumacher would be on anyone's short list of the greatest drivers of all time. Let us hope that he can not only survive this terrible event, but make a full, or virtually full recovery.
