not in this state. NJ is one of 30 states by my last check that stopped inspecting vehicles for mechanical defects to save millions in the inspections. This also includes no longer checking safety like brakes and tires. Commercial vehicles still have to be inspected in the old way. You still have to get your car inspected for emissions but even that was downgraded to cars that are five years older or more. It's also non-points ticket so I'd wagered on just paying the $100 fine. But as it happens there's a shop around the corner that I just noticed that does the emissions check.
