Well that's interesting because I never get, hear or read Boxster/Cayman cracks from the 993/964/etc. guys.
It's almost always first time Porsche owners in the water-cooled Carreras. Now contrast this with othe brands, for instance look at M3 and Z4 owners, I don't really see any of this sort of thing. But I guess BMW didn't ever set out to market a roadster as 'entry level', they just gave folks a big engine in their roadster if they wanted that option.
Porsche decided to go out of their way and create this faux stepping stone marketing spin. I guess that's one way to get a repeat customer to spend more the second time around.
However, I've seen PLENTY of air-cooled Carrera cracks on the water-cooled so they aren't all angels either.
Which leads me to the conclusion that as soon as you get into any Porsche, someone else is looking down on you and ironically it's another Porsche owner. The average non-Porsche driver who compliments a Porsche never distinguishes in any specific way other than to say "nice Porsche".
