Other than Porsche's infamous waterpump, there really aren't many mechanical issues with the range of years you're looking at. Early Caymans can have "trunk clunk", but that's fixable. You are correct, 08 Boxster S's got the 295 HP Cayman engine. My Boxster had the wp go out at 26K but it was covered by warranty. My 07 CS hasn't had a mechanical issue since I've owned it (almost 2 yrs). Both are very dependable cars. Couldn't say that about the 01 Boxster S that I had prior.

If you're trying to trade your Box right now in a cold weather climate, don't expect top dollar. But the Boxster or Cayman you're looking at should also have the winter discount. It's never a complete wash as the dealer always has the advantage. But they should be willing to dance as there are fewer customers wanting a mid-$30s car vs a $10K car. They'll give you a lowball bid right off the bat but should be willing to deal if they find you're a serious buyer.
