You'll lose about 4-6 oz. of oil when you remove the filter housing. Yes, you can simply change the filter if you wish... I am assuming that the oil has low miles, but you'd like to get a look at the filter, just for peace of mind, yes? If so, go for it. Install a new filter including the gasket on the housing.
