MR2 Spyder definitely took inspiration from 986 - lightweight affordable mid-engined roadster, down to the rear looks like the front styling.

Dimensionally, BRZ/FRS closely resembles the 98x series. Toyota/Subaru even mentioned in the press release that the center of gravity is 1" lower than the Cayman.

Don't forget Chris Harris also did a comparison between these cars first so you can't blame C&D for doing a "horrible job".
