I passed my driver's test in my mom's Metropolitan in 1961. She often drove myself and 3 friends to high school. I can hardly believe now that we all fit in - must have looked like a clown routine when we got out. I even got laid in it - Heidi was a very short girl.

Had two VW buses over eleven years endlessly adjusting the valves. Went through three engines, always the No3 cylinder. Two copies of the Idiot's Guide. It was the first thing I ever taught myself without a class or teacher. Gave me confidence in using my hands so when I graduated U Berkeley I became a carpenter, later cabinetmaker.
