Likely the reason the key is stuck in the ignition. The steering wheel may be locked, which doesn't allow the key to turn without shifting the wheel.
Please let us know the year of your car. If it's a 2000 or later, you should have the positive terminal in the fusebox that Jäger mentioned. Otherwise, you'll want to do what golonaus mentioned.
