Similar story, had to replace the spark plug wires on my Miata at the 7 year mark. I think it's more age related than mileage, since the car only had 43,000 miles. The 1997/98's are reaching that age now. I think the insulation breaks down, which is critical on high voltage. Don't know if heat is also a factor, but the car spent its life in FL and SC: both very hot. Also may be a good time to think about other rubber items - belts, hoses, etc. if not replaced already.
