I used an old soldering iron I had kept and a pair of very long needle nose pliers...didn't take very long, but the hot iron makes very quick work of the amber plastic, making it quite simple to pull out with the pliers. The amber plastic is quite tenacious and you risk damaging the headlamp by attacking it with pliers alone.

Purchased the silver/amber bulbs from a eBay seller...very nice quality.
