FWIW:
After I changed my oil last month, I noticed two oil gasket rings on the floor.(oops). So I tried to just loosen the filter and fit it over, but had to take it off. My car was jacked up in the rear and i only lost about 1/4 or less of oil.
Just drain a quart or two back into the containers to make sure you don't have overspill, but you should be fine
