The Bentley manual has the diagrams. You need one, trust me, we all do.
Since you got some effect by removal, I'd pull the ass'y out and clean every connection with electrical contact cleaner. Same for the bulbs.
Don't use anything like Brasso or polishes which tends to insulate the connection.
