I have seen people towing two jet skis with a Boxster, but most people tow a trailer with autocross gear. The weight of the trailer is not the problem, its the tongue weight you need to worry about.

That's only partially true, sure the tongue weight is very important in it's reaction with the suspension, I had to put air shocks on the truck to compensate for how soft a Mountaineer is sprung. However, where I disagree with you is in negotiating hills, you will feel the entire towing weight going up or down.
