Ok, Rob, I threw caution to the wind today....

1) The porsche 2 prong plugs for my MY97 were very close to .8 mm as ToolPants said they should be... more like .9 though. I left them the way they were and only fiddled with one or two of them that seemed far too close or too far away from the center post.

2) The plugs I removed today were gapped far more than the ones that I put in.

The car runs well, so I think that checking them would be good to do when you get to it.

The project isn't difficult, but does take a lot of time if you've never done it before. The first one took me 30 minutes. The next two on the same side took 15 minutes each. The three on the other side took all of 20 minutes tops. Learning curve.
