There is already an 8 mile stretch of I-5 in California which has sensors imbedded into the pavement. Buick is currently testing prototypes communicating with these sensors to 'drive' the car - total lack of driver input.

For major expressways, this makes sense because through proper spacing and speed control, a lot of conjestion can be avoided or at least better managed. Of course, there is also a safety benefit to this as well.
