I read that it's 20 hours labor to take a 6-spd tranny apart.....that's just labor who knows what parts and additional labor will cost once they find the problem. Taking the tranny out and swapping it with another should only cost(labor only) around $600-$1k MAX for a straight swap. That may be the more cost effective route.

If this is the case you might want to consider keeping an eye out on eBay for a used tranny. They go for $1-2.5k used with low mileage. It's not worth taking it apart and finding the problem,it could be dragged out way longer than it's worth $$$$ wise.
