There is no way to get 14 mpg in a car as light as a Boxster without driving flat out all the time. There is definitely something wrong with your motor.

My '97 3.4 gets 25-26 mpg with "normal" driving (whatever that is!), 16-17 when I give lots of demo rides on a tank (i.e., flat out runs to 130+ mph and just plain hammering the crap out of the car) and will get 29 mpg on the highway if I keep it under 80 most of the time.
