Hard to say what you're hearing from across the Pacific, but the Boxster engine comes "on the cam" at about 3,000 - 3,200 rpm, so it would be unusual if you did not feel an increase in performance, and sound, at about that rpm.
My old 911 did the same thing. It felt like it got a couple extra cylinders at 3,200 rpm.
