I finally got my 2000 boxster fixed after about 10 months of procrastination. I have been dealing with the check engine light and the codes 1128, and 1130. Last Feb. I had it to the shop here in town that I used to work at before becoming an engineer, and got it checked out.

So here is what they said:

An oil leak from the filler tube had leaked on the right bank O2 sensor connector, causing a poor connection, and clogging a breather tube for the sensor, making it run lean. They replace the tube and cleaned the connector.

I accepted this, and got the car back. one month later, the light comes back on, both codes are present. now the fun starts.

I was hesitant to give the shop another $300 to "check it out" again, so I sat on it. The only question I had for the shop was why the two codes?

1128 right bank running lean
1130 left bank running lean

The shop says I could have two bad sensors.. and that is where I cut them off. I said thanx for the info, I will be in touch. The odds of having two failures occurring at the same time without a common cause is remote to say the least. I have been fixing cars since I was 16, and spent 5 years workin' on Porsches, and now I deal with trouble shooting highly complex electronics, and I have seen multiple component failures only once or twice.

This past week, I cleaned the MAF sensor, and the light has been off all week, where before the light would come on as soon as you started driving.

This makes sense, the MAF supplys info which could effect both O2 sensors. Another perfect example of the trouble codes pointing to a symptom, and not a cause. The shop prolly would have put 2(or 4) O2 sensors in, and said here ya go, have a nice day. When the light came back on, they would have said, "oh, looks like you MAF sensor was bad too"...

Moral of the story? I am glad I spent the first 16 years of my working life under a car, cause I can fix my own stuff.. It is rare to meet a technician who really knows what they are doing, and takes the time to diagnose a problem correctly. I think you guyz out there who have no choice but to deal with these clowns are in deep dodo....
