Slow forum?? Can I help??

Since day one.. this place has been SLOW. Is there anything I can do to help speed it up?? I'll host it for FREE (for minor advertising rights) on a FASTER professionally maintained server (zero down time) 500gigs of space and unlimited bandwidth. I colo the server in New Jersey, and from CA. you'd think you where sitting in the colo facility on the same network.

I run 3 other forums. All of them on the same server with over 20k users between the sites. It still hauls ass

I was driving through Carlsbad, CA on Route 101 about a week ago and you know I was thinking much the same thing... Stop in to say hi to Brucelee, thank him for all his efforts at running this list, and ask how I could help to speed it up. Its noticeably slow at all times. I can imaging the list running on an old 386...

I have 18+ years of professional computer experience and 21 years of Porsche shop experience I'd want an ad for my small parts business just like the ones running. Nothing more.

Where is Bruce Lee located? I'll pop in and say hello! I run back and forth between SoCal and NorCal 8-10 times a year hauling cars/race cars for people + parts. Easy for me to schedule a sit down with him!

Wink

I also belong to a Jaguar forum. They have it set up where if a member makes a contribution they get a little color bullet next to their ID.
Contributions are as little as $20. They allow zero commercial advertising and the site is very fast.

I just as soon pay a small donation because I have belonged to other lists that vendors can contribute and get a free ad.

What has happened because of this, the forum has become very political. If some one has a question they get directed by the members to buy such and such from this vendor, its the best blah blah blah.

If a member bought something somewhere else they get ridiculed.

Not that vendors that put ads on forums have junk, its just not the place for it. This is my .02.

I too have noticed this slowing down.

I will contact Richard K and direct him to this thread. He handles the tech side of life, I work the moderator side.

Thanks for the input!

Let me chime in and say the board hasn't always been this slow... there was a point not too long ago where it became noticeably slow... and if I were to guess, I wouldn't say it's the hosting, rather database server related. (Which could be a result of switching hosts, coincidently.)

Ping times from Upland/Alta Loma area are 80-90ms. I think this is a mysql or php issue. Is this on a Windoz box or a *nix box?

No UK routing for me - it will be location and setup dependent for each member and where their ISP DNS servers are directing traffic. The techs suggest everyone use OPEN DNS servers (208.67.220.220) to direct their traffic.

My hops from work at Boston (no speed issue) are:
Hop Time Host IP Location
1 1.903 xo-gateway 140.239.191.1 Santa Ana, CA, United States
2 9.029 ip65-47-242-9.z242-47-65.customer.algx.net 65.47.242.9 Culver City, CA, United States
3 45.622 ge6-3-0d0.mar1.santaana-ca.us.xo.net 207.88.81.193 , , United States
4 29.848 p5-1-0-0.RAR1.LA-CA.us.xo.net 65.106.5.13 , , United States
5 10.162 te-4-1-0.rar3.la-ca.us.xo.net 207.88.12.153 , , United States
6 9.38 207.88.12.154.ptr.us.xo.net 207.88.12.154 , , United States
7 8.925 64.212.107.85 64.212.107.85 , , United States
8 90.953 64.209.109.190 64.209.109.190 Cumming, GA, United States
9 80.008 gi-2-1.dist02.tor1.prioritycolo.com 204.11.48.238 Toronto, ON, Canada

I have Comcast at home and also do not have a problem. I'm not saying others might not have an issue so we'll continue to look at this.

Yep. Well known throughout the industry that Comcast DNS servers are not up to speed (being nice here) Thanks for the DNS entry! I'll try it now.

It appears your office is connected to another office here in CA? It looks like everything is piped through here??

I must say, it's the database servers... coupled to the fact that the hosting is from a reseller of a reseller. AND, on top of all that, we're using vBulletin (3.0.5) which frightfully bloated in features -which can bog down servers.

Need a forum upgrade/switch? I'm in on that action if needed!

Geeze that stuff gives me a headache.

I'm on Verizon FIOS and as mentioned before, the board runs slow from my perspective...
