Ebay cat back, and cherry bomb glass paks. Should sound just like a Silverado :D :D :D

I'm curious about that motorcycle you got in that last photo :D

She's my long time compatriot. A 1974 CB550. I used to do all kinds of buying and selling of motorcycles, you know "fliping". Don't find myself doing that anymore, but this bike has stayed around. Its the best bike I've ever had; just the best all around. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1584920747.jpg Finished hard mounting the cherrybombs to the trans cradle. Seems so weird not to hang an exhaust but the engine/trans move as one unit so does the exhaust. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1584920805.jpg And I started on my heater core return hard lines. As seen in red. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1584920868.jpg |
Heater core hardlines made up. They mate up to the Porsche soft lines.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1585010640.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1585010720.jpg I'm really stoked at how well and fast this is going. Not much more but to route the coolant outlet to the Porsche outlet. Then rebuild the engine/clean everything up, and turn the key. THEN on to "stage II". I gotta rebuild like everything else... ugg. But that's just spending money on suspension/tires no real hard work. |
Started with my adaptor plate.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1585616187.jpg And simply drill holes. :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1585616266.jpg And then mockup, just for fun... cause I can't take it anymore. :D :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1585616404.jpg |
Well, I just gotta say that I thought that getting the engine to fit in the 986 was going to be the challenge... BOY was I wrong. That was super easy compared to making a draw through M90!! But its done now :D
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1586560243.jpg ^^^ That's the 4.3's LIM http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1586560290.jpg ^^^ that is a 3/4" chunk of aluminium that has holes drilled in it. :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1586560358.jpg ^^^ there is the blower with a spread bore/square bore plate bolted to it. |
FINALLY done with fabrication/welding. (except for the A/C hoses)
The supercharger and carburetor are all mounted up. and the belt is routed... note the poor picture addendum LOL http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1587355315.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1587355366.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1587355397.jpg ^^^^ that's a stock idler pulley... I just happened to find a little hole in the ac bracket that had just the right threading and just the right spacing to make for PERFECT supercharger belt wrap. :D :D :D |
Waiting for the machine shop seems to take forever. But it'll be worth the wait when I have that clean block. :D
In the mean time I got a fuel tank. And re-furbished it a little. Should fit in the back trunk; at least I hope it fits in the back trunk. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1591567628.jpg ^^^ Electrolysis is the best. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1591567701.jpg ^^^ acid etched with POR15 metal prep. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1591567764.jpg ^^^ and good ole rustolem for the finish. |
Love this thread, don't know why I took so long to start reading it. Look forward to reading more, you've got some great skills!
|
It`s coming along nicely! What`s wrong with the original gas tank?

This is gonna be a duel fuel machine. LP and gasoline. I figure I've already got a super tall engine; why not make it taller with an LP mixer. :D Got some new brake hoses in the mail... and installed them :) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1591915759.jpg ^^^ don't think the old ones were bad, but I'd rather not risk a caliper over 20 mins worth of work. |
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1592437733.jpg
New struts and mounts came in today. The old ones.... well they weren't doing ANY dampening at all. :( Also, I got some new control arms. Man, this thing is gonna handle like OEM. :D |
Due to my grey interior I can't really paint the car BR green (or in the Porsche world Irish green). Wimbledon green was the runner up, but lately I've been thinking its too much effort to color change a car and not get the color I want. SO I've settled on just a simple re-spray of the silver paint. Because of this I've decided to paint my turbo twist wheels "cliché black".
They came out alright. There was a small issue with the base fish eying, but I think I nabbed it and hid it under the clear. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1593303976.jpg Still just waiting for the machine shop... If I get more body work done before the machine shop finishes I think I'm just gonna pull a random 4.3 block from the junk yard and slap it in there. |
Pre-cut window tint. The drivers side was a little bit short, but looks fine when the window scrapers are on. $12 for both sides; not so bad when you think that its $10 for enough tint for a pair of windows. Its 25% VLT; state law is 27.5% but hopefully it won't draw attention for the $500 per window fine.

If the supercharged chevy is the cream filling then that makes this purchase the sprinkles on top :D :D :D
I got myself a "Z-art top" http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1594658542.jpg Just need a hood and a bumper. |
I finished mocking up my plexiglass rear bulkhead. I'm supprised how well a 24x48 inch sheet fits back there. If I didn't have a super tall engine I coulda almost just run strait 24 inches of height.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1595117545.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1595117605.jpg Ya'll got any tips on cutting plexiglass??? I got a plexiglass specific jigsaw blade, but I'm open for words of wisdom or experience. |
No pro but we cut it on a metal shear, bend on a brake. Use wood or cement drill bits and tape before. Main use for me is making machinery guards. Ymmv...

Fortunately other than a weird contouring cut along the roof line I don't think I'm gonna have to bend it at all. I also got special plexi drill bits. I'm excited to learn a new fab skill. :D |
Keep the protective film/paper/plastic on until you’re ready to install to keep it from getting scratched up. Use tape if it’s bare. Go slow with the drill and blades.
|
You can spray the plexi with ice water if it starts to melt or overheat when your cutting. Keeping it cool helps keep the blade clear of melted acrylic. I found higher speed worked better (i was using a dremel). I left the wax paper on last time (helps stop scratches while your sliding it around to cut it.) I also tape the edge where I'm cutting.

Oh the paint and body... I do not like body work; But I enjoy a good sharp paint and body car. But I DO NOT LIKE TO DO IT. Oh well do it mostly right and I should only have to do it once every 10 years or so.
Still got some wet sanding to do but for the most part pretty good. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1595978614.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1595978667.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1595978723.jpg |
Wait...what...Z-ART Top?
JB... JBeeeeeeeeeeee...look! Did you get the full package, nuts, windows, seals, etc...? |

Dude who sold it to me didn't have the hatch struts though. :( I'm about 100% certain I'm going to keep the stock rear deck lid and make some louvers for the engine cover. |
Louvers?? Obviously not yet fitted. And I'll only be able to use them when I don't have the rear hatch on the car.

the Z-TOP needs a ZWEITE ENTWICKLUNG in the first place :D
I could think of two versions: a.) Hatch window needs to be cut (not a good idea) and its frame permanently attached to the top. Rear deck lid with small window needs to be separated...rain water still needs to be adressed  http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1596373559.jpg b.) Keep the window size, attach it permanently to the top and build new hinges for the rear deck lid, that would slightly move it around the window, when opened. Rain water still needs to be adressed  http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1596375376.jpg plan b would be interesting although the window would reach into the accessible trunk space. |

haha.. I understand the confusion. I'm not using the supplied hatch when I use the louvers. I might use the hatch sometimes. The factory stock rear trunk lid fits with the top in place. That's what I'm gonna use when I don't want the rear hatch. I do plan on making a flat bar "hatch" to support the louvers that will bolt to the existing hinge that the Z-top uses. Rain water. I'm making a bulkhead that separates me from the engine and the rear of the car. That will permanently make this car a coupe; one step shy of just glassing the top to the body. So the only rainwater is gonna be that which hits the engine. Using the supplied hatch will eliminate this all together and using louvers will mitigate it. |
Yeah, Louvers kinda mess up the lines, but it does show off the engine.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1596473713.jpg The hatch looks smoother. Probably gonna be a 50/50 split. sometimes on sometimes not. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1596473800.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1596473845.jpg |
Oh man the wire fish. I was not looking forward to this. Fortunately, someone left a wire in the tube; so I just had to pull it through. :D
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1596765093.jpg ALSO, in a double whammy post. I had to replace the lights; the old ones burned out. I just used some LED stick on lights. Actually came out pretty perfect. |
Here we go... The rear bulkhead is getting mocked up right nice.
I think I'm gonna use some of that angle iron with holes in it to make the face detachable for service. But time will tell which is the best way to do it. Fortunately cause the hood that came with the car was trash I've got tons of spare steel to make this thing out of. and its PURE steel from Finland. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1597455437.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1597455545.jpg Paint is coming out pretty good, but its like fighting me every step of the way. I've had more problems with this paint job than all the other paint jobs I've ever done before collectively. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1597455653.jpg |
Last bit of fab; I swear. :D
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1597707478.jpg ^^^ I recycled the trash hood the car came with. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1597707548.jpg ^^^ Its just tacked up; I need to figure a better solution to NOT burning the carpet with slag. I need a fire blanket. |
I guess that about does it for the welding... Now to get a little creative with the seam sealer.
Thanks for the tips on cutting the plexi. I didn't use ice water in a bottle. I froze some alcohol and put it in a spray bottle. That kept the blade cool I suppose. It cut nice and easy. NOW just need to finish setting the plexi in its place with some u-bolts??? and this bulkhead will be done (mostly). http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1597801520.jpg |
So, finally done with the painting. Just a wee bit of polishing to do now. And maybe finally I'll get my block back from the machine shop.
Anyways here are some groady before pics. Trust me it looked worse in person. :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735641.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735670.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735697.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735724.jpg |
And here are the after images. Strait off the gun; haven't polished yet.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735827.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735864.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735903.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1598735929.jpg |
Now it's official. I'm 100% sealed off from the back part of the car. Got weather stripping, welded in bolts, and all kinds of sealant. :D

I put some carpet up. Cut it to size and gave it a good washing. Now I just to glue it in place; oh boy contact cement time. :D
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1599441146.jpg Since all yall folks been talking about the rear aluminium transmission cover and how its structurally relevant. I figured I'll sub in this piece of square tubing since I can't use my trans cover. I think I'm gonna beef it up a wee bit by making some attachment points on the front of the subframes. Making the final shape a "K". http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1599441365.jpg |
:D the machine shop is on my engine now :D :D
I got my heads back. Lapping in some ole valves :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1600394584.jpg Holds alcohol head pressure... good enough for me. :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1600394527.jpg |
