My New Oil Drain Plug
The all aluminum magnetic oil drain plug came today....Under $4 including shipping. They come anodised in a few colors Red, Blue, Black and the original aluminum.

They're all over eBay.
My fear (and the reason I never bought one) is that with our oil sump design and the way these type protrude from the bottom of the sump, a rock or road debris could catch it (or speed bump or driveway scrape) and crack the sump plate or even rip the plug right out. If it happened, you could dump all your oil and bad things would happen.
Not a good idea on our cars.

good point
Just don't shut off the engine 
IIRC, Mr. Raby said if the engine is running, oil will not drain out of the sump even with the plug removed

I would not bet your engine on that....................
We have seen customers that had the drain plugs fall out, the engine's did not survive.

I'm not saying that it will happen or even that it's likely, just something to consider. A filter mag is a better/safer investment, IMO.

What about a Fumoto oil drain valve? Anyone heard of any problems with those on a boxster?
Tried to perform my a DIU change on my car today, and found that the last service stripped the 8 mm hex hole.
Can't get the plug out!

If you think an oversized drain plug is a problem, install one of these things. They stick down far enough that they will quickly be snapped off..............

It's been a while on this last post. But I just wanted to say, I have the Fumoto valve on my VW Sportswagon and it's a must. Oil pan drain plugs that are steel like the VW's strip the threads on the oil pans very easy. The last time I tried to get the original drain plug back in my VW it took many tries and then I was not sure if I was in trouble wrenching it slowly. That's why I installed the Fumoto. I just drained the oil on the VW last week and just a second or two it's open and draining the oil. By the time it was all out I had removed the oil filter and installed the new one and torqued down the cap. Once the Fumoto valve is closed in went the new oil.
The reason I did away with the original Porsche drain plug was to prevent stripping the hexed portion of the plug. It's soft metal and it happens. Even torqued properly you have to pull fairly hard to loosen. It can be scary I hear and it was for me Now I don't worry about stripping with this new drain plug.
