Been working on three projects that all have interference with each other.
Started on Friday, still chipping away as I discover parts I need and parts that need replacement. 1. Replacing factory shifter with a short shifter. - Factory shifter has 167K on it, and is a little sloppy. 2. Relocating windows & seat heater buttons from center console to dash board. - 4 buttons unused in dash, windows & seat heater buttons are 4 switches. 3. Adding a Continental head unit. - Conti unit does not have a CD player, but has Bluetooth and aux, and looks period correct for a late 90's "factory" looking head unit. Short Shifter Got everything disconnected and found one cable end is rather chunky, and I have to go order one today. Also, the seat/window harness runs under & to the side of this shifter unit. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...v-jpg.1534326/ Stock on left, canted away from driver. eBay (B&M clone) canted toward driver. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...6-jpg.1534709/ Test fitting & shifting until the cable end gets in. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...e-jpg.1534727/ https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...k-jpg.1534728/ Relocating Buttons Button | Function | New Function/Button 1. Traction Control | Used | n/a 2. Blank | n/a | Driver window up/dn 3. Blank | n/a | Driver seat heater 4. Door locks | Used | n/a 5. Rear window defroster | Not needed in Las Vegas | Passenger window up/dn 6. Top up/down | motor/trans removed, not needed | Passenger seat heater This was something I thought of, and hadn't seen anyone on 986forum do. There is an airbag module on the forward part of the tranny tunnel that cannot be [easily] removed. Airbag module is an issue because the wiring harness for seat/window controls runs in a channel between the module and tranny tunnel. Module can be seen in the 2nd pic of this post, below the dash, orange/yellow box. I had to flag all of the 16 or so wires, cut, reroute, and crimp on connectors, once they were all rerouted through the dash it was good to go. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...1-jpg.1534338/ Newly relocated switches, all works well. Just waiting to button it up fully until the harness adapter for the head unit arrives. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...s-jpg.1534280/ Continental Head Unit Has power, antenna, but just not the speakers connected. New harness has different color wires than factory. Unable to find which speaker wires go where. Going to order a Bergvill harness adapter. Due to lack of CD player, it is a very shallow unit. That is good because I chose not to cut off the existing plugs from the unused buttons, and they need room to be stuffed in there with the harness I rerouted for the new buttons. Ordered this radio straight from Germany for a couple hundred Euros. Arrived at my door within 7 days. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...q-jpg.1534359/ |
Also, shout out to Woody for a helpful hint about my vents and how to rig it up so I don't need to buy another vent horseshoe deal.
 |
Pelican Parts has the cable end connector, for $20 + $8.50 shipping.
Local Gaudin Porsche dealership has it for $16 and it will be there in the morning. Amazing. It seems like my local Porsche dealership is usually the same or a little cheaper than Pelican Parts. I've not experienced this with any other vehicle manufacturer I've dealt with. We always refer to the dealership as the "stealership" because of the inflated parts prices. |
Glad I could help save you some $$. Why did you move the window and seat function buttons? I moved my window buttons from the front spot to the rear. I'll probably switch them back to the original spot next time I'm digging in that area.

- because my center console has some miles on it, kinda loose fitting - blanks and unused buttons in the horseshoe were annoying and pointless to me - proper number of blanks and unused to swap, so it was a good match - would like to fabricate or redesign the factory console to include cup holders and a spot for my carry piece |
I really need to clean this fvkcing car. lol
If you're wondering what Der Faszination is, it's a Porsche films/local Las Vegas/enthusiast group. Really glad I got to meet some member and made Porsche friends. The PCA doesn't really do it for me. For the Deutsch speakers, we know it's supposed to be Die. I hit 168,000 miles a couple days ago, so I decided I should clean her up a bit.
Temps in the upper 90's and low 100's, overcast all day yesterday, was a good day to take off work and do some car & truck stuff. I used Optimum Opti-Clean concentrate to clean her off, some Goo Gone because I'm still finding residue from the wrap, and a vinegar based window cleaner to clean the wheels. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...psa0a4qu7w.jpg http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...psueokgg6g.jpg |
An amateur photog grabbed some snaps of my Boxster from Cars & Coffee and Cars und Kaffee a couple weeks ago.
I tracked him, Anthony Greene, down on IG and he sent me the pics. His instagram is @theautorama They show the road grime incredibly well. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497160943.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497160973.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1497161002.jpg |
So, the stereo harness adapter came in from Bergvill.
I had the CDR-210 factory unit, you need this adapter to connect Bluetooth and radio work great, stereo is great, reception is great, no complaints. How the Bergvill harness connects to the Conti stereo. https://www.tacomaworld.com/media/li...ate=1497213187 How the Bergville harness (left) connects to the factory harness (right). https://www.tacomaworld.com/media/li...ate=1497213118 I did have to shave off a little of the inside frame so the stereo retention sleeve would fit. Don't forget to bend the 4 inside tabs and two bottom tabs on the retention sleeve to prevent it from sliding back out. https://www.tacomaworld.com/media/li...ate=1497213115 All buttoned up and fully functional. https://www.tacomaworld.com/media/li...ate=1497213111 |
Going through the process of extracting media from Photobucket, bear with me if you're looking for pictures.
