Be careful with cleaning them, though. Brakleen is bad for them, or anything else with plastic bits.

Another way you can test spark is by pulling a plug out (make sure your fuel pump is disconnected) and grounding it out while cranking. Then you'll have a clear visual cue.

My guess would be that the motor could be going out, or that a cable or gearbox is causing it to load up more than usual. Mine started to groan a little before one of the cables went out.
