Hi,

Not necessarily. Something to investigate to be sure, but it could just be dirty and in need of an Oil/Filter change. Fresh Oil will clean it and it'll sound OK. The lifter could also be bad, but not likely as the lifters on the M96 aren't usually a problem. I wouldn't automatically run away if everything else checks out, I'd ask the seller to pay for an Oil change (with the proviso that if that fixed the issue and I bought the car, I'd reimburse him for half) Hope this helps...

Octane booster(fuel injector cleaner) would help to i guess?

Nope. Octane booster is generally worthless as far as boosting octane, and this happens inside the combustion chamber. The ticking is likely outside the combustion chamber in the valve train. Any repair work to the cylinder head is big $, and there is some risk that you may have a bent valve or something from over-revving. If the engine is gunked up enough to cause a sticking lifter from using cheap oil or not changing it frequently enough, that might indicate poor maintenance. I have zero ticking in my Boxster. Your friend might want to get a read-out of the over-revs as well. Could be a very expensive/risky Boxster. If you can't solve the ticking problem, I would pass. There are plenty of nice Boxsters out there.

Typically our flat six engines make a slight rattle or maybe a ticking sound at idle but it is very slight. I couldn't tell you if what you are hearing is normal without more info or a sound clip. PPI time if the buyer is serious about the car.
