If I were to swap oil coolers.....
I'm looking to put in a "S" oil cooler in my Boxster soon and was wondering if someone could chime in on a couple of questions I have.
-Once I drain the coolant out is it reusable?
-If I can't reuse the old coolant, what coolant is suitable for the Boxster?
MNBoxster,OhioBoxster or Toolpants????????

Hi Blink, I don't think an oil cooler uses coolant to cool the oil. I think an oil cooler is just a device that uses heat transfer to air passing over/through a small radiator type system/unit.

I guess I should be able to pick it up at any auto parts store.
Well looks like I will change it out next month, too busy with the hollidays now.

Hi,
What makes you think you need it? Without an Oil Temp Gauge, you have no idea that the current setup isn't adequate. You can get Oil Temp on your '99 by using the Climate Control Diagnostic readout, the code is 1c (°C). But then, what is the Proper Oil Temp? How do you know you require additional cooling?
The old Couldn't Hurt theory isn't justification enough to do install it, especially on today's OBDII cars.
The engine needs to retain a certain amount of heat to operate efficiently. Potentially messing this up can have the DME selecting all the wrong MAPs and such. You may not even notice it except maybe in Range, or longterm evidence on the Plugs or Cats. If you don't need it, you don't need it (which I suspect is the case)...
Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

Yes true Jim,but I have been thinking of doing some simple performance mods soon and figured that the car could run a little hotter because of the gains. Wouldn't adding bolt ons such as headers, intake add a little more heat?

So how did you calculate that the "little more" heat will be compensated by the "little stronger" oil cooler? By assuming little = little?

Yep. The "S"/996 oil cooler is almost twice the size of the base Boxsters. I talked to someone that did it and he said it was a noticeable drop in temp when the car is pushed, otherwise the car runs about the same temp.

A third radiator is no joke,I have seen the instructions on how to do it,a PITA. The 3rd radiator can range anywhere from $600-1k is you want the Porsche one and a full day to install. The oil cooler is different,$105 for the oil cooler and 4 o rings(2 different sizes) and $35 for 5 Gallons of Chevron/Texaco DEX-COOL coolant and only 1-2 hour job.
Both are overkill but one is super overkill. Keep in mind I'm only doing it if I decide to start doing aftermarket bolt-on parts.
