Exhaust for 986 / 987

Hi All,

The 987 Cayman 6 speed gearbox (G87/21) is now mounten in my 986. Next point of attention is the exhaust as the OEM base '97 muffler won't fit behind the (longer) 6 speed.

Sound wise I don't want / need it to be louder than OEM exhaust. It'll remain a street car and it doesn't need to shout. I do want it to be ready for more power when the Audi v8 will drop in over the next winter.

So I am looking for ideas on an exhaust to fit the 986 (M96 engine with default spots for cats/ manifolds), but clear the 987 transmission.

OEM 987 rear silencer will not fit directly. It'll mount to the gearbox and fit the car, but pipes towards the engine are in a totally different position. Guess it'll fit if I include the 987 manifolds, but that's going to be a pain judging by the rust on the nuts/studs. And I don't plan to run the engine for more than the remainder of the year, so any cost on the engine side is a waste.

It looks like some aftermarket exhaust are made to fit both the 986 and the 987 with different connecting pipes. That might be an option, but needs further research. Any ideas or pointers?

It seems there is quite a bit of space at the back of the car and it could fit regular silencers with entry at the front and tip at the back. It would space both sides apart and I'm not sure that would be good for the sound of it. Would this have potential? I am not yet worried that I'd need to modify the rear bumper for such setup to fit.

I actually find it interesting that the standard setup has such odd pipe routing. Nicely along the gearbox, then going to the side to loop back in to the silencer. Why doesn't it connect directly into the silencer? Anyway, just wondering.

Research so far seems to indicate that an OEM exhaust would suit my preferences best and likely the PSE models would be the best choices to make some noise when in the mood and be modest most of the time.

987 exhaust seems to fit, just the entry pipe would need to be sorted out. Used ones in reasonable condition are not really available for reasonable prices. This is far better with 981 exhausts. Length and width seems fine judging by pictures, but they look a fair bit taller than 987 mufflers. Are they?

I am trying to get an old / damaged one to trial fit or see whether I can borrow one.

For the interested people; I have found a damaged 981 PSE muffler to trial fit. After removing the heat shield I would say it fits in quite nicely. So this is the route I will take for when the V8 goes in.

For the coming year I will trial fit a Dansk Sausage. Not too sure how much smaller that is, but hopefully it will fit behind this gearbox.
