Differential side cover O-rings

Hey all: Starting to build my winter list. I found that the passenger side differential side cover is leaking, along with the axle shaft seal. The Hayne's manual doesn't cover any of this. I've found threads that cover the axle shaft seal and that seems manageable but nothing about the housing O-ring.
Can anyone share or confirm that the splined shaft that goes through the cover to the diff can be removed as an assembly? I would not want to pull it and hear some random parts inside the diff tumbling down to the bowels of the unit.
From the parts diagrams it looks like the splined shaft will pull out, the cover can be removed, and once the O-ring is back in place it can all go back together.
If I get to this repair this winter I would like to do both sides, and both axle and case seals.
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks for reading.
Rob
