Thinking further, that TN signal at pin 18 is coming from the DME pin 80. Without the DME, you will need to pick up an RPM signal from the engine.
X59 pin 18 (Violet/Green wire) does carry the signal forward to the cluster and OBD port RPM pin.

I may have the info for the Audi side of it buried in my notes, but probably not for today. You have the 32 valve engine? Pretty sure my Bentley manual only has the 40 valve.
