Oil drain pan and filter wrench

Hey I’m in the market for a new oil drain pan and filter wrench for a NAPA Gold 1042 what do you guys use? I am deep sumped so I’ll have about 10 1/2 L coming out. I like the look of the combined container and pan style but it looks like it’s going to splash all over the place when used. what are your thoughts?

oil drain pan

I bought a large capacity drain pan many moons ago after a huge oil spill draining a 911.

That looks like the ticket how tall is it? I am really lowered....and I will be on ramps

Starter986 10-18-2020 04:16 AM

I use the same tub as Keith. Works great. It'll be fine under the car on ramps.

I use the Hopkins FloTool 42003MI 16-Quart Drain Container purchased at Walmart for under $15 at the time. I use a shipping box, perfect size in my case, to put the oil container in so I can drag it without wearing the plastic down and prevent any excess spills to the floor. It's been working great for the past few years. I do a few oil changes before dumping it at the local Autozone. I use rhino ramps and there's enough room.

Looks like it's on sale

I have the same one as Keith, works great. I bought it at princess auto after I had an accident with my 10 liter one, I think it was under $20.00 including tax.

I have this:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/FloTool-42003MI-Drain-Container-16-quart/44580714

With a splash pad (cut to fit):
https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-38780-Square-No-Splatter-Pad/dp/B002AENGOG/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=oil+splash+pad&qid=16 03029052&sr=8-3

And am a big believer. Super easy to move the drained oil around without any worry of spilling and pouring into the used oil bottles for recycling is a snap. The splash pad ensures there won't be any issue with splatter and losing the drain plug.

I'm seriously considering an oil extractor pump for my TDI Touareg (Tow Pig). Does anyone use an extractor on their 986? Seems like a clean easy way to do oil changes without pulling the plug.

Any recommendations for an extractor? "Mityvac 7201 Fluid Evacuator Plus" is what I'm thinking.

I have a recommendation: DO NOT USE AN EXTRACTOR, change the oil the way it was designed to be changed.

Over the years, we have had numerous Porsche's flat bedded to the shop because someone got the tube down into the sump, and then could not get it out. There are just too many edged surfaces that can catch and trap an extraction tube, making it impossible to pull out from the top. When that happens, the sump cover has to come off and the tube pulled out from the bottom. Bad idea.

Thanks great advice guys what do we think about this: https://www.amazon.ca/Lumax-LX-1632-Black-Drainmaster-Storage/dp/B0059HJSA2?

The 8 inch opening looks a little small to me. Too small for comfort?

Any thoughts on the best 1042 filter wrench?

BrantyB 10-18-2020 10:07 AM

8" doesn't give a lot of wiggle room.

This is the wrench I use:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GBVHTZH/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B08GBVHTZH&pd_r d_w=Zfwkq&pf_rd_p=7d37a48b-2b1a-4373-8c1a-bdcc5da66be9&pd_rd_wg=IZAjq&pf_rd_r=B7MFWBTR93Z6PJ K8D63B&pd_rd_r=f44c9ff1-f663-434e-b24c-e99565427eaf&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFQTUhZ WkJJTENBMUcmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzMDA3MDQxNFNWQ0RBUV oxMDdQJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAyNDIxNTAxQTdTVzBGS0k4 WVBEJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1 JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Yeah that what thought as well, while 8 inches is a very good number in certain regimes, catching splashing hot oil is another ball park:D:D

I may give it a go as the other features are good......wheels, storage and secure transport.

I went out and bought a similar wrench on Amazon. Thanks for the feedback.

20 gal mixing tub from HD $14 bucks or so. Use this and/or place the others shown inside of this http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1603306645.jpg

jaykay 10-21-2020 06:02 PM

Nice idea!

rfuerst911sc 10-28-2020 07:28 AM

Back when I owned several air cooled 911's and a 914/6 I quickly learned NOT to use a catch pan with the small openings .......... think Exxon Valdez  . Our Boxsters do not have as much volume of oil as an air cooled 911 but I don't trust ANY container with small openings . My Boxster has an extended sump so quite a bit of oil . So does my wifes Volvo XC90 and my diesel dually pickup .

I now have a 2 post lift so I do my oil changes standing up like a human :D using a conventional shop oil drain rig . But I still keep two open design containers for my diesel garden tractors and similar equipment . Like this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/Neiko-20762A-2-Gallon-Portable-Drain/dp/B00JJ63MDS/ref=bmx_2/130-3297384-8870303?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00JJ63MDS&pd_rd_r= 9b4b9aac-c843-4e67-9f0d-30c109f6d7cd&pd_rd_w=Yf0ps&pd_rd_wg=GGad8&pf_rd_p= f660ec4a-991e-41e4-ae58-c9a67945fc93&pf_rd_r=CVFAT5FHH8APYMS9VHPK&psc=1&re fRID=CVFAT5FHH8APYMS9VHPK

I will let the oil cool in the drain pan and then pour into containers that I recycle at local auto parts stores . Letting it cool = less chance of burns .

Is 8" dia opening too small in your opinion? Just came in today and need to make a call.

I went for the ramps and I am way too lowered for them .....in a bit of a bind with only my race jack on hand to do a staged lift up on to stands using rear suspension mounting points. It will be a process. Hopeful the oil will still be warm once up:eek:

JayG 10-30-2020 09:01 AM

You can always run the car on ramps to warm it up.
In any case, it takes a bit of time for the engine to fully cool down

Try a small 2x8 in front of the ramp to raise the car a little to get on the ramps

I use the same one. I can do oil changes on the Box and my BMW then seal it up for a single trip to dump at Advanced Auto.
