P1340 - 01 error code

Hi all

I’ve just bought a lovely 1999 2.5 Boxster and really wanted to join the forum.

Unfortunately my car is throwing up the above error code which I understand is - Timing Chain out of Position Bank 1.

Car is fine idling when cold but there is a de table slight misfire at idle when the engine is warm. The CEL also goes on and off but will come on mainly after the car has warmed up.

I’m aware this error has shown on other member cars and would like further info as to what the issue may be or was your experiences.

Many thanks in advance

So that code is saying the camshaft is out of time in relation to crankshaft position.
That could happen when things like timing chain tensioners wear out.
Causes excessive play in the timing chain
you could find a scanner that reads camshaft deviation as a check.
If you have excessive cam deviation that would verify the codes.
or verify proper timing by aligning the factory timing marks.

If the above is all ok then I would look to the camshaft position sensor being faulty.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Diagnosed as 4 cracked coil packs - not sure this will cause that particular error code but let’s hope so.

Keep us posted on the end result. Always interesting to know what happens with a particular situation.
I would be interested in knowing if the timing chain code returns after the coil packs are replaced and the code is cleared.

Finally diagnosed as a faulty solenoid valve.

Engine light went out after new plugs and coil packs were fitted but error code remains.

Unfortunately it’s a 20 hour engine out fix. Car is going great too.

Did you get this fixed? I was able to change my variocam solenoid on bank 1 with the engine still in the car, but access is quite tight.
