Behind the carpet. This is mine when it was replaced last year.

There is a control unit under the driver's seat but that is for something else.

What could cause one to replace their ECU besides water leaking into the computer?

It would have been about $2,000 but I did not pay for it.

It was smog time in March 2005 and I could not go on the machine because of the check engine light. Gone through this before, every 2 years, ever since I bought the car.

But this time I had 6 fault codes. The big one was 1689 - faulty DME and the only cure is to replace it. Until the DME is replaced you do not know if the other 5 are false faults.

When my car was sold in March 1997 the California emission warranty was 7 years. It is right in the warranty booklet - 7 years/70,000 miles. So I was past that.

The shop foreman is a friend and he said the California warranty was 8 years. My car was a few days shy of being 8 years old. So I got a free replacement DME. Never bothered to check if the newer cars had a longer warranty or how it could be retroactive to my 1997, as I think I got a favor.

I thought in my manual that it stated emissions warranty to be 10 years/100,000? Well at least thats what I thought I read on my 99' manual.

Hi,

$2000?? YIKES! Glad you didn't have to pay for it. I think I'm gonna go and give my DME a hug - don't want it think it's unloved! Thanks for the info...

Rather than thinking, read your warranty booklet. On mine 1997 it says 10 years for the corrosion warranty. Rust.

Has nothig to do with the subject; Federal and State emission warranty.
